After much thought and encouragement from my boyfriend, I decided that I would start blogging about our life and it's crazy inhabitant called mental illness.
I'm not a professional in psychiatry but I am a professional mother that has a child/adolescent that has mental health issues. For almost five years, my son has been dealing with his illness and with dealing I mean he has been hospitalized more than 20 times. Every admission is something different. He visits with his therapist twice a week and psychiatrist once a month. The copays and his medications will start to get expensive soon but if I want him to continue on the road to stability. I must work an extra job to cover those expenses. I hope that it will all be worth it.
Eventually I will tell you more about me and give you a formal introduction but for now my name is Stephanie and my mission is to save Daniel, to advocate and stop the stigma that keeps mental health from getting the appropriate attention it desperately needs.
What do I mean by saving Daniel? Have you ever had the overwhelming feeling of unworthiness, sadness, shame, had auditory and visual hallucinations, thoughts of cutting or taking your own life? Well my Daniel has all those feelings and at one point attempted to take his own life.
By utilizing this website, I will make sure that we help those in need in similar situations. I'm hoping that Daniel will embrace his illness and use it in a positive way to touch the hearts of the uneducated and help open their eyes to the harsh reality of mental illness.
I'm a mother with an agenda to save her son from the grips of his mental illness and stop stigma so that those who suffer in silence can seek help without fearing the worse. Join me on this roller coaster ride..you're no longer alone.
